Went to the local pull-a-part

Post by OldRedFord »

Went down to the local pull-a-part today with the intention of getting some C6 oil cooler lines, power steering lines and a few other odds and ends.

One thing I noticed...every single bumpside and dentside that was a auto...the oil cooler lines had been cut off to get the radiator out. :x Or just cut off at the transmission end, or cut off at both ends. :x

Also on every truck the sender harness between the motor and firewall was gone.

One truck did still have a c6 in it but the truck had two sets of stands in the front holding the front of the truck up. Was pretty hard to get to the transmission to try to get the shift lever off. Someone had already gotten the kickdown lever. And when I got a good look at the shift lever it had a stud on the end, where I need one with a hole or I got to find a different rod to go between the steering column and shift lever.

I did get some good p/s lines, a coil wire, a clip for one of the heater control wires, and a throttle linkage between the pedal and carb.

The throttle linkage was off of a dent but is the exact same as what I got now, it will work tho.

I was also looking for a one piece driveshaft to use in my bump. The few I had seen the forklift had bent.

The cool stuff..

There was a late 70s early 80s F550 with a Holmes 500 wrecker on it. Took some pics of the wrecker.

Under the hood was a puke tank for the radiator, but it had a hose coming from the tank that appeared to tie into one of the radiator hoses.

There was another Holmes wrecker on a dentside.

This cab sticker was on a 1971 Bump, I never knew they were Ranchero's.

No you dont. I wish I had a way to get the wrecker off and bring it home.

On the wrecker I wanted to get the gas pedal linkage off it. The rod between the pedal and the carb had a ball and socket swivel joint on each end. I tried to unbolt the rod from the pedal rod but the stud for the joint just spun. So then I just tried to take the whole pedal but there was a flat piece of steel attached to the rod on the firewall side preventing me from pulling it through the hole in the firewall.

yep that's the junkyard. Destroying everything possible to get the one part you want out a minute faster.
Pulling an engine? seems the best way is to cut the whole rad support out and yank it through the front. i have seen a massive chunk cut out of the rad. support and grill for easier engine removal.
Need a steering column? apparently it goes faster when you break the entire slick AC system in half.
That's how it goes...

Bobby if you look around the lot at tow company yard, particularly an outfit that's been in business for several decades, chances are you'll see an old Holmes, NoMar, Weldbuilt or other twin boom wrecker that the owner just can't bear to part with. Beyond sentimental value there are situations that the old twin boom units have advantages that modern hydraulic units just can't match. In areas like western PA drivers can find themselves facing a recovery job where there just isn't enough room to maneuver a rig due to narrow roads and short, steep hills. With a twin boom the booms can be split and swung over the sides allowing one line to work the load while the other is tied off to a large tree or other anchor point to stabilize the truck. Another advantage is the cables can be lifted out of the sheeves ( pulleys ), the booms split and you can winch directly off of the mast head. This again lessens the room needed to work and changes the center of gravity to help keep the rig stable. :)

Hey OldRedFord the next time you go to that yard see if you can get the Holmes plates off of those wreckers. I collect emblems and body builder plates and would be happy to buy them from you. :D

My dad had a '71 F350, twin winch, split boom tow truck for years. He taught me how to drive it and operate the back half when I was 10 years old. Seeing those old trucks brings back memories :).

yeah if you go to tow411 you can see pics of old rigs quite a few mid 70's F350's with holmes and weldbuilt and others. split boom and otherwise.

I made it out to the local yard today and got the seat belt assembly for my '89 cougar for 15 and they pulled t, and i pulled the console for 20 just to get the lid becuase they only sell those whole.

also on ebay i got the lh tail light assembly, repair manual, and a new in oem box replacement grill for 78.95 shipped.

now i can get it legal.

also i have been to those yards, where anything to be picked over gets forked right through the body pannel, driveline parts you need most for your build  or worse the old rim(usauly realy nice mags that they ruin just to use as safety stands that make it tough or impossable to get to what you do need.

BTW what shift linkage do you need? the one that is a rod with Trunions(i have been told theyare called this) or the one that has a slot in it and gets bolted in place? i have never seen one with just a hole in the trans end yet. but have seen 3 of the ones from dents with a 2-3 inch slot in the bottm.
