t-bird

Post by choptoptruck »

I see that this forum has different topics besides are trucks, so I've got a problem and thought maybe somebody here would have an answer.
My youngest daughter has a 63 t-bird, its been chopped 3 inches and lowered 3 inches. We used fatman dropped spindles. They take granada rotors and calipers. We used a new master cylinder from a mustang.
The problem is the brakes don't work good. You have to push hard to stop and stay stopped at a light. We put a new booster on it and that helped, but its just not right.
Does anybody know if a granada has a porportioning valve or not. We used the distribution block off the granada and its hooked up right. Is it the porportioning valve too? I thought all cars that had disc's on the front and drums on the rear had porportioning valves. All the granada has is the distribution block.
Any ideas?
Thank's Million's!!!

I would probably do a junk yard search from a newer '90's car to get a known good proprtioning valve and verify the plumbing. A big Crown Vic would be a good source, something before antilock brakes. My ranchero with a Granada swap is about the same, takes a good bit of effort to work the brakes. I figure the proportioning valve isn't right. Also note that Ford used 1" and 1 1/8" bore master cylinders. I have a big bore on my car and it's supposed to be a bit stiffer.

I recommend a good NEW proportioning valve. Lot's of the t-bird vendors have them. Bird Nest: http://www.tbirdparts.com/main.htm tbird ranch: http://www.tbirdranch.com/discbrk.html and t-bird hq http://www.tbirdhq.com/center.htm all have parts.

Most importantly, come visit us at the Vintage Thunderbird Club International, all the knowledge you need will be there: http://www.vintagethunderbirdclub.org/phpBB2/index.php
Look at the 1961-1963 modified forum especially.

It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!
