Fixing Firewall Cover
When trying to pull back the carpet from under the firewall cover awhile back I busted the cover up pretty bad not knowing how fragile it was. There are a few cracks above the trans hump in the floor and a small hole ( I have the piece that went there). The cover is still mostly intack just a few cracks I'd like to clean up with something other than black tape. Anyone got any ideas how to fix it or where I can find a new one for cheap?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Fixing Firewall Cover
Without seeing what the problem is I can only guess. I have a TIG welder and welding very thin sheet metal with bronze rod works well for me. Even using steel rod may work. I don't do MIG but people who do may have suggestions. If you don't have access to a welder, fiberglass would probably work. You would apply a coat of fiberglass resin or 2 part epoxy and press pieces of mat fiberglass over it. Then apply more resin or epoxy over the fiberglass. You can apply more coats after it sets up if you need to.
Just a couple of ideas. Others may have a better way.
Good luck!

Re: Fixing Firewall Cover
The cover is insulation material, not metal. They sell new replacement ones, but that's all I know of.

My guess is, just bite the bullet and get a new one. Not unless someone here on the site just has one lying around. If you get a new cover be prepared to take a lot of stuff out just to install it.

Wow! I just went to NPD. $217 for a new one, plus shipping (and it's probably oversized to boot)! They are molded ABS plastic, so it will probably last forever.

They're not cheap, but they're not that bad to install, although you do have to remove anything attached to the firewall. This is one of those jobs best done during the interior phase of the project. ![Thumbs up ](./images/smilies/icon_thumright.gif)

Re: Fixing Firewall Cover
Right now I should probably focus on other issues if its expensive and hard to put in. I have one of those under dash AC units too so that's adding to what I have to take off. I'm glad they still make them though. It just bugs me seeing duct tape on it. I might try some black expoxy on it though. Thanks for the replies

Re: Fixing Firewall Cover
Mine was damaged in a few places so I went ahead and bought a new one from NPD, as said above you need to remove everything to install like it was from the factory. I already had mine stripped when painting except for the steering column, I just cut a slit in the new firewall cover above the steering column and slid it around it. You can't see it or tell I cut it now that the truck is finished, just an idea if you get a new one to help save a few hours of work on the install.flyboy2610 wrote:They're not cheap, but they're not that bad to install, although you do have to remove anything attached to the firewall. I am of an age now that most of life's lessons were learned the hard way;
Life is hard, but it’s harder when you’re stupid.
Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction.
Never ask how stupid someone is 'cause they'll turn around and show you.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
If you had the choice “Looks or Brains” take the Brains, Looks will get you thru the first half, but Brains will last a lifetime.
