What under dash A/C is best?

Post by Gardener »

I live in the SouthWest desert and summer is a coming! So I've been looking at adding under dash A/C. You got Vintage Air, Classic Air, Old Air, Nostalgic Air and maybe even more to choose from. I was looking at the OLD AIR
http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/1 ... -4362.html but I can't find any pictures of this unit installed. Do any of you guys or gals have one of these? Or any after market/universal A/c system in your truck? If you do, would you send or post some photos. I'd like to know how much space they take up. They do give you the size but when I made a carboard mockup it seemed really , really big.

Thanks, Jon

Here's what a Vintage Air Gen II Mini looks like installed http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &start=525 (bottom of page 35). Here's a similar thread I started http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =6&t=73405 If I can't find an original factory unit, I'll probably be going with the http://nostalgicac.com/evaporator-units ... truck.html or the http://www.oldairproducts.com/catalog/1 ... -4501.html

Here is a pic of mine, it was a dealer add on in 68. I like the looks of the more streamlined models that wrap under the steering col. and give that extra outlet. I just may leave what is under hood and one day change out the in cab A/C parts. Running R-12 in mine and it works great. Amazing since it is original.

Here's a picture of mine. It came with the truck and probably was dealer installed. I'm using the long GM compressor now but when I used the York it worked OK. I used to spend a lot of time in the CA desert.

I went with the Classic Auto Air system mostly because it uses the factory controls for a more stock look. Unfortunately, it is still in boxes in my garage as I have not reassembled my truck yet. But there was another member here that put the system in and while every system is going to give you some installation issues (nothing is ever easy), once he got the system in and running, he gave it a positive review.
