1972 f100 how to remove gauge cluster

I got some new dash lights.. Any suggestions before I take out the cluster? How do I disconnect the speedo cable? then Just one wiring harness?

please advise.

JB,

It's pretty straightforward. 8 screws, reach around the back and loosen the nut holding the speedo cable in, then pinch the top & bottom (the short edges) of the connector to release it.

Double check your bulbs, it may be that some corrosion has caused the lights not to work. A little elbow grease with an eraser on the contacts can clean them up. That and a little dielectric grease, and you'll be back in business.

If your circuit "board" is bad, replacements are available, as well as the sockets, lens, voltage regulator, and bezel.

I started this job last summer. Once I had it out I decided to take it completely apart, clean and repaint it. I opted for led lights. But immediately regretted it. Went back to regular bulbs. It also turns out that Ford didn't think it was a good idea to paint the inside of the cluster white to help illuminate the gauges. Since there are only 2 bulbs that light the entire cluster I thought that was pretty lame. Once I painted the inside white and used a 3M headlight lens restoration kit on the clear plastic to get rid of the yellowing it was 10 times brighter at night. If I ever get around to it I'll post pics.
