Repairing original dashpad with fiberglass? Anyone done it?

Post by Bryan_Tenn »

I have my original pad off, was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I've been debating on what to do & after reading a thread on here the other day I was getting sold on putting a cover. When done right they look good. I figured if I took the pad off the dash I could really glue it & clamp it well all over so it would be even better than trying to do it while on the truck.

But I was googling & see a guy on a forum for those generic motors trucks who has fiberglassed his original dash.

The thought had crossed my mind, thinking it couldnt be that hard to make it look good. But my bodywork & fiberglass skills are limited on something that will be so visible. I basically rebuilt the vent side end of the heater box with fiberglass mat & resin, & it looks okay for something tucked under the dash.

Anyway, heres the thread I looked at, looks like a pretty simple procedure, just wondering if anyone here had done this to our trucks & if it is worth the effort. Like this guy, I would fill the speaker hole with foam & plaster over it, I'm wanting to just put 2 speakers in the doors.

personally i don't think the fiberglass would be worth the trouble. If funds are tight i would opt for the cover. Prepping the old pad for the the new cover is where you will spend most of labor. As you say, the cover might need to be reglued every 2 years but it would be a heck of a lot better than fiberglass . Someone on this site used the cover and it looked real good. I purchased a new pad from Dennis Carpenter and was pleased.

yeah I saw this thread & thats what was changing my mind from keeping it metal to using a cover. But a cover is $140 or close to it & I can fiberglass it & paint it for around $40
