Automatic or standard transmission? If auto, then the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch) may be bad or unplugged. Did you try moving the shifter while holding the key in start position? Worn NSS or sloppy motor, trans or cab mounts or sloppy column can cause issues.

Did you also try transmission in neutral?

If still not working then go on

No ground on the fender can make the solenoid not work (if it's loose, same thing) The "S" terminal on the solenoid takes power in to make the 2 big terminals contact. If you have a test light, see if power comes out to the wire on the S terminal.

Well I have the potential for several of those. But he way automatic.. I have to eventually work on cab and motor mounts. Because of rust..is that what you mean When you say sloppy mounts. And shifter is real loose also. Sounds like I need to do some investigating to do. Thanks in advance

Yup. Sloppy column and linage with potentially bad motor mounts isn't good. I know one guy who wheeled his, hit a bad bump and his truck shifted into reverse at full throttle on an uphill climb!

To make it crank? Power to the S terminal on the solenoid will do it IF you don't have the extra ground on the back of your solenoid. (2 big terminals for a cable to the battery and the other side to the starter with 2 small ones marked "S" and "I".)

Just a note, but the only thing on the rear big solenoid terminal going to the starter should be that cable and nothing else. The rest of the wires with a big ring on them go to the front one, which has the big cable that goes to the battery + terminal.

Thanks carnuck.. Hang with me . I will have lots of questions . Was trying to figure out why nothing happened when turning the key . Double checked everything and ended up steering column needs work. Thanks again .. Now that I know I can get it started I will start working on carb and fuel lines
