Replacing wipers gaskets

Post by takehikes »

Appears my 68 is letting tons of rain in via the wipers. I know there is a rubber gasket there but how best to access it for replacement?
I assume that's where the water is coming from as it is leaking on to the floor mat directly in line with where each wiper is.

They are a real PITA to work on. They are probably the first thing to be put in the dash area so I'd expect to pull out most of the dash on the driver's side to access them. I think I used some black Permatex to seal mine when I installed them. Hardest part was remembering how the linkage was positioned so they worked correctly.

any way to caulk them up and not remove the gaskets?

haven't had mine in the weather since I'm doing full on resto. I ordered new gaskets but they looked like a joke, just thin hard paper. I used strip caulk behind the pivot plates and sucked them down tight. Strip caulk is awesome because it doesn't harden or shrink. But, like I say, it hasn't been in the weather yet. Just another option that may be easier to deal with. The strip caulk is in foot long strips, 1/4 in diameter so you may not have to take the wipers clear out if you can fish the strips in behind the plates. Good luck!
