So right up front, I have minimal knowledge of trans stuff
I have. 69 f100 240 l6, 4 owners I'm number 5 at some point one of them did a c4 auto swap. It has a Hurst 3 speed ratcheting shifter.
So here are my issues.
1) it's hard to get in and out of gear. I lift the release and try to move the selector down. Into gear and it's stuck half the time I have to play with it up and down kind of hard before it jams into gear. Which takes me to
2) when I finally get it in gear is slams into either drive or reverse depending on what I'm doing. And when driving it shifts so ugly slams into 2nd or 3rd
Where do I begin to fix this problem.

Well if you're on a budget you can adapt a stock floor shifter from an older Mustang ,Cougar or even an Aerostar van.
or gt a new shifter that's simple to use.
Someone probably put a " shift kit" in it ,
You can get a stock valve body and swap it out , that should make more driveable.
Also make sure you have a vacuum line to the modulator on the tranny , with out it, it'll shift hard.
