New to putting an engine to my truck. The flat plate the is in between the engine and transmission does the go to the engine side before putting on the flex plate. I am hoping to put the engine and transmission in tomorrow if my help shows. Thanks for any help.

Yes, it goes on before the flex plate attaches to crank shaft! There may also be a metal ring that goes on the trans side of the flex plate and attaches with the flex plate to crank shaft bolts, make sure you re-install it, it spreads the clamping force of each bolt which helps keep the flex plate from cracking.
