390 Stroker --> 1972 Shortbed

Good morning team Ford-

I have a 1972 F100 lifted 4x4 shortbed that came with an anemic 360. I might have gotten a tad bit carried away at the machine shop - the machinist rebuilt it into a 390 stroker that he said should come in right around 500 HP (did I mention my machinist used to race :lol: ?)

Anyways, I have a buddy that is mostly a Chevy guy and he's telling me I will need to box the frame and all kinds of other stuff to make it 'safe' to drive. The machinist is telling me the truck should handle the new motor no big deal (did I mention my machinist used to race :lol: ?)

What do you guys think?

Transmission? Gear ratios in differentials? How're you going to use the truck? Just because the engine produces 500 hp doesn't mean it all makes to the tires. With those tires you've got on her she needs a lot of ponies to make 'em turn. I wouldn't be afraid to drive her as is. 8)

Tell your Chevy buddy it's a commonly known fact that GM frames of that era were flimsier than Ford........sorry for him but it's true....... :evil:.........stick it in, fire it up, and have some fun....... 8)

Now I never did win Mechanic of the Year, nor have I ever stayed in a Holiday Inn Express, but I think you would burn your clutch, break a driveshaft component, or something similar before you twist the frame on that truck.

Keep us posted, I'll be watching how this one goes together.

What oil pan is that? Interested to see how it fits and clears with the 4x4. Don't think my 68 has as much lift, but given how hard it seems to be to find a factory 4x4 pan, I'm interested in how the aftermarket options fit.

Im not looking intensely yet but keeping eye open for a rear sump oil pan as well for a build. They must be gold lined for originals because Ive seen one for about 250$.
