1969 F250 towing ability
Hello everyone! I am in the process of piecing my 69 F250 together. My truck has a 360 FE with the 3 speed on the column. I was wondering if it is realistic to tow a 14ft horse trailer with the 3 speed transmission or if I should buy a newer model truck solely for that purpose? Looked around and have not been able to find any information on someone towing with this setup so I assume it is a no go but just wanted to hear other thoughts.

It should be ok , depending.
how much does the loaded trailer weigh?
do you live in a hilly area ?
Years ago I routinely pulled a truck on a trailer , the combo weighed 7000lb ish.
I used an F100 with a NP435 4sp . usually I wouldn't use creeper unless I was putting around or got stopped at the bottom of a hill.
I had 3.50 gears.
I put front disc brakes on and had trailer brakes. but it still was a load.
I then upgraded to an F350 and 4.10 gears. that pulled much better , again with a 4 speed.
And of course it's not what it'll pull ,but also stopping and handling are important too.

The 3 spd. should be okay for occasional towing, but Ford recommended a 4 or cruise-o-matic. I would consider a heavy duty clutch and rad. For reference, the Camper special required 3.73 gears and heavier springs.

My 1969 F250, 360, 3-speed was ordered from the factory new by my Dad in April of 69 and I’ve owned it for 47 years. Dad hauled a large truck camper while pulling a boat. Never a problem or issue. Your set-up will be fine.
