Speakers

I was wondering if I could get some ideas on where people have been putting speakers in these old bumps. I don't want nothing extravagant, I just don't want to do a bunch of cutting either.

Well...I have not done this yet...but I think it is getting time to.

Here is my thought. I am going to build a box/ center console.

It will sit in the center with cup holders and a lift top...inside will be a am/fm/cd/mp3 receiver and I plan on installing two 6x9 speakers on the outside of the box (built into/recessed into the box) on each side angled up towards the driver and passenger. I have dreamed of it for years...probably should act upon it.

That way I can keep my original AM radio for originality sake and I don't have to cut my doors/dash.

I cut my 72 doors, but I love it. 5 1/4's in the doors. I think the website in my signature has pics.

I just got some old speakerboxes from Wal mart and put them on the floor! It takes up a little room but not much. When Im driveing I can't tell there even down there. I just ran the wires under the rubber. Cheep and no cuting.

i looked at a dent (74 i think) it had like 3-4" cubes mounted behind seat next to gas tank with one screw through a bracket. I doubt they could hear it over the engine though, it was a big block or FE 4x4.
You could actually put 6x9s under seat in a box, if you are only one that drives it. so they don't get pulled loose by seat moving and such. On second thought 3x5 or 4x6s would fit i'm pretty sure.
I kind of like the idea of and audio console though, welded in so its not too easy to steal

The audio console is an awsome idea. I am so glad my seat just got finished.... I was thinking about the headliner, but it got done with my seat and I would hate to cut it too. My doors are allready cut, but how the old speakers set, the window wouldn't go all the way down. Thanks for the ideas though, I might move my gas tank out of the cab, and put them there. But that will have to wait until I am ready to paint. So many options!!!!

Joshpow, thats a good looking truck, I didn't see the speakers though! I was thinking something like this, and bolting the through my headline facing somewhat down, and than run an XM radio. I have been looking for stuff ever since I posted this. I could hide it all, and than gut the stock radio that is no good, and light it up to match my dash. so for the most part it looked factory. Here is what I am thinking though.

Ranchero50 and I are thinking about installing speakers next to where the in-cab tank would be, right in those holes that are on the very sides of the cab. im going to try it.

That might work, but my tank is still in there at the moment. I am going to get a tank for under the bed, but not for awhile. Probably do that right before I paint, so I can get rid of the hole that the gas cap comes out of. You will have to post some pics whan you get that done I would like to see how it turns out!!

My installation was a bit complex.

I took the plastic speaker boxes off of a pair of '93 Explorer JBL speakers, used some grilles from a 1980s Crown Vic wagon, put some after-market speakers into the JBL boxes and soldered some Ford connectors onto the speakers. I put the assemblies together and ran a 1974 Maverick stereo harness under the dash, up the windshield pillar, and down the driver's rear quarter pillar to the fuel tank area. I sat the speaker assemblies on the fuel tank, on the left and right side, and made some adapters to go from the old style Maverick speaker plugs to the new style Ford speaker plugs. I plugged the speakers into the Maverick harness and then made a Mono to Stereo adapter at the back of the '78 Dentside AM/FM radio I put in the dash. It was a bit of work but I didn't hack up my original wiring in the Bump.

I don't believe I have any wiring left in it. Someone wasn't really nice to the radio system and wiring, and just replaced what they took out with a stock radio that doesn't work. So wiring will be all new. If you had a picture of your speakers that would be awsome. I would like to see how you mounted them. Thanks for the reply!!!

My dad had someone cut into the pillars between the front and back seats and installed speakers there. They never worked right (neither did the aftermarket AM/FM cassette), so I bought an old AM and put it in and just hooked it up to the old front speaker. I may replace the pillar speakers sometime down the road.

i dont think it matteres if your tank is in there, you should still be able to mount speakers beside the tank. also once i do it i am going to stuff something in the hole or something, so there isnt a echo.
it will all be in my project thread once i get to the re-assembly point. i am at the body work point, then i have to paint, the re-assembly so it will be a while.

I look forward to seeing your setup. I have a year or so to wait on mine, but I wanted to start getting all the stuff I needed to finish it now, along with all my ideas in an orderly format.
