Heater core replacement any tips or pictorials

While installing my new heater hose today I noticed a little excessive movement on one of the heater core tubes. I have a good idea something let go in there. Any tips on removing or photos of a removed heater box would be appreciated. 1970 f250 heater only no a/c Thanks

sorry i have done one on 68 f100 with a\c what a big blank. so yours should be easier than mine.

With NO a/c...it's a cake walk!!!!
There are about 10 screws holding the cover on (inside cab), once you take blower motor off, remove screws, the cover falls off and you slip heater core out. If you take your time, it might take 10 minutes to get it apart.

If you take the heater box out I would flag the control cables with masking tape and a magic marker. I can never remember wich cable went where. I marked them the last time and it made it go a little quicker.

I also need to replace the core in my truck. Is this where you are talking about taking the screws out of, towards the back?

No, those are on the front....and those are for the blower motor. You need to remove the entire heater box to get to the heater core.

From the engine compartment, remove both heater hoses and the three nuts holding the heater box to the firewall. Drop the heater box down and disconnect the heater control cables, making sure to mark them for correct position and disconnect the electrical connector. Then just pull the heater box out and set it on a workbench. Flip it over to the back side (where the heater core nipples are protruding) and you'll see some small bolts/screws which hold the back cover on. Remove those screws to get the cover off, and voila', there's the core.

Here is a tip for changing hoses. ALWAYS slit the hose off the heater core nipple and peel it back. I have seen more heater cores ruined from people trying to twist the hose to get it unstuck.
And if it's on a car with a 4-5 hour flatrate, plan on spending all day, maybe 2 to get it, like on an air conditioned T-bird, Volvo, Subaru, Cadillac ....

It is a cake walk if you have a lighted shop or do it during the middle of the day. Still not to bad when you start at 5PM when the days are getting shorter in a gravel drive way and finish up by flash light. Mine a 72 f250 no AC. 7 screws for glove box liner, all the rest are 3/16. 3 top the right one goes down into the blower housing and also has blower ground attatched. 4 holding blower motor on housing. 3 just underneath the blower and 2 just to the right of that going up through the housing. The 2 vent cable controls behind the air outlets on the housing are also 3/16. Took 8ft of new heater hose for slicing and dicing. 40 min daylight 60 min flashlight.

I would remove the heater box, disassemble it completely, and clean all the rust off the metal parts, repaint it, and have it looking like new.
The paints drying on mine as I type this.
(I warned the wife I was going to do a lot of painting in the basement over the winter. She even said I could bake the paint on the metal parts in the oven! )

I was able to get by cleaning mine up with Simple Green.
No rust on it. I haven't ask my wife yet if I could bake ford parts in the oven. Although my ex used to make some stuff that kinda tasted like baked truck parts.
