headliner

Post by jimmy828 »

I'm getting ready to do the headliner in my 69 but have to know how thick the original liner was. The liner was missing when i purchased the truck. I have been checking some materials out at Lowes but did not know how thick i can go with it.

3/16 of a inch is what my original measured out to. I think you could go up to 1/8 inch with no problems.

I used 1/8 hardboard is what lowes calls it. Worked great, covered it with duck cloth from Joann's that my wife had. Quick cheap and easy. Of course I had my old headliner as a template.

I used wood paneling for mine, stained and varathened it. I also used my old one for a template. Would have been a lot harder without the pattern.

I know. That's going to be a problem for me, no template. I guess there will be several do overs on getting a template to trace to whatever i going to use.

If you have the trim just lay it out and mark it on some cardboard, just cut a couple of extra inches and then set it and the trim back up there and do a final trim. A little more work but you do what you have to do. Mine was so brittle that all it was good for was the template as it was crumbling in my hands as I handled it on removal.

Just pulled the headliner down from my 69 f100. It is pretty brittle and faded. Used to be white. Considering some options myself. What about putting sound deadening material in as well? Anyone done that with success. I have read some issues with products not sticking.
