Heater box - paint the inside?

Post by sargentrs »

Got some time on my hands so thought I'd take my OEM heater box apart and rebuild it. It came apart pretty simply and looks like a no-brainer reassembly. On the diaphragm's that direct the air flow is a foam gasket/seal. It's badly deteriorated and needs to be replaced. For all you guys that have already done this, what did you replace it with? Thanks!

Purchased a kit from LMC Truck. Check heater components/cooling section in their catalog. Part #43-1054.

Now that I have my heater disassembled and my new gaskets ordered (thanks Lenny!) , the inside only had mild surface rust. I've wire brushed the metal parts and the decision is whether or not to paint the inside. Thoughts anyone?

On the inside that doesn't show I used rust reformer by Rust-Oleum on mine. It is sold at auto parts stores and Wally World. There r other brands of it also.

I cleaned mine up and sprayed it with Rustoleum Self-Etching primer.
While the box was apart, I was able to trim/adjust the flappers a bit to make sure it got full fan power to the defrost ducts, seems to help a bit.

I used the screws I removed and where there were no screws I used rivets.

Thanks lenny! I may just go back with bolts/nylon lock nuts. I may have drilled out the rivets with too big a bit.
