Heater control

Post by Cornhusker »

I'm almost embarrassed to ask but I am having trouble figuring out the heater on my 1967 F100. It's the simple factory knob. When I turn it clockwise it has some resistance and kinda clicks. I pull on it and the knob comes off. The heater could very well be broken too. Any advice is appreciated.

If it is the economy heater, it will have only 1 knob. Turn it to turn on the blower, 1 click for low, 2 clicks for high. Pull it for heat, it will pull out a bit and you should be able to hear the flapper inside your heater box move. To switch between floor and defrost, move the metal lever on the heater box. If it is the deluxe heater (or whatever it's called) it will have 3 knobs below the radio that should be labeled.

Thanks for the info! I have the 3 knobs. First is pull for heat and click to the right for high and low. Second is for heat and third is defrost I think. Anyway. I pull the second one out a couple inches and am assumin that will be for Max heat. Air is blowing cool. It's 30 degrees here today but I let the motor get warmed up and it is not hot. Assuming the heater is not working properly???

Cornhusker,

I fumbled around with my 67 controls, too, when I needed defrost in a monsoon. AFTER that I figured it out.

First knob: Pull it out to get the heater to work, click it once for high speed, twice for low.

Second knob: Pull out to increase temp. It will do nothing for you if you do not pull out the first one.

Third knob: Pull out to use defrost. Does no good without pulling out the first two (or at least the first one).

If none of that helps, your thermostat may be shot. Easy $2 fix.

By the way, let me know if you need a 67 owner's manual. It helps take the mystery out of these odd birds.

Thank you for the help 3 Speed. I'm thinking it may be the thermostat. So, could you fill me in on where it is located? I'd be grateful. And thank you for the offer on the manual. I actually bought one on eBay a few days ago. Looking forward to going through it when it arrives. Again, thank you for the info.

Might want to check that the heater control valve, in line on the heater hose, is functioning. It's operated by one of the cables you're pulling on.

If it's even hooked up.....without looking at my 67 to re-familiarize might wanna track those cables and make sure there not seized up or what they attach to are seized up. When I got my 67 the control valve cable had become the choke cable  I would make sure of these things before going after the thermostat... :2cents:
