Why is my driver's window loose?

Post by guhfluh »

My driver's window is loose in the channels. I figured it was because the driver's window is used most, the seals were worn and the glass run or channels just needed adjusting. The problem is that I just pulled the glass run and vent window assembly out and changed all of the seals and even the felts, but no adjustment will tighten the window enough to make it so it doesn't wobble back and forth in the channels.

I was hoping to find a schematic of the door and find out that I was missing a part for the glass runs adjustment or something, but I haven't found a schematic and the pictorial doesn't mention any parts I'm missing...

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm guess I'm planning on pulling the passenger door apart tomorrow and see if I can tell any difference between the sides, but I'm stumped right now.

This might be somewhat of a longshot but have you checked to see if the glass the correct part? If all of the mechanical stuff is correct, the only thing I can think of is the glass might be too small.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

Thanks Bill,

From what I can tell, the glass is correct and original, but I haven't pulled it and compared it's width measurement to the passenger side. It has the same part etchings as all of the other three door glasses though.

I did pull the passenger door panel and look inside to compare looks, and I also took measurements from the front glass run to the rear door frames on both sides, and they seem to match... my best guess though is that the drivers door channels are bent somehow, widening the space between the two - about 1/4" too much it seems, because if I push the Window forward or back, it can almost come out of one of the runs. I *did* notice that my drivers door is bent slightly at the bottom of the window, where the front glass channel runs through, widening the gap between the Window felts...not sure how to fix that or if it is making a difference with how the Window rocks.

guhfluh,

I'm interested to know what you find. I have the same problem on my list of things to address. I just figured it was a worn guide or something.
I know my glass is original as my family is the original owner.

Keep us posted.

While playing with the passenger Window yesterday, putting it back together, I noticed it makes a difference how tight you put the vent Window screws. So, it MAY be just that the vent Window rubber has shrunk too much and tightening the mounting screws down create too much of a gap in the window channels by pulling the glass run too far forward. Not sure though. I don't have new vent Window rubbers to try and at this point it would be a huge ordeal to take back apart.
