Hello All,
I am in the process of replacing the in cab gas tank on my 68 F100 with a new Dennis Carpenter unit. When I pulled the old tank out, there is a rubber pad about 1/4" thick glued to the passenger side bottom of the tank only. Also there is some jute backing glued to the vertical recessed channels on the back of the tank between the tank and back of the cab. Should there be more than one rubber pad under the tank? Is the pad for anti squeak, or does it have something to do with sloping the tank slightly? Also any advice on something to use between the tank and back wall in place of the jute?

None of the tanks I have pulled have had a rubber pad under it so not sure what that is. As for the jute replacement, I use foam weatherstripping. You can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a roll of cheap peel-and-stick foam weatherstripping for house doors very cheap in different sizes. I have a roll that is approximately 1 inch wide and about 1/2 inch deep that I cut to whatever length and then stick to the back of the tank. Works great and very inexpensive solution.

Re: In cab gas tank rubber insulator
The 69 I took apart had 3 or 4 rubber pieces under it. This maybe only on the earlier tank mounting style.

Mine had the same rubber peices that Tac's has.

Re: In cab gas tank rubber insulator
I have pulled a 72, a 69, and a 67 and have yet to see any rubber pieces. Are they visible in that picture above? Not sure what I am looking for... And where exactly do they go? Maybe they are something i should have and don't? And like the OP said, I wonder if they have something to do with tilting the tank slightly to the drivers side where the fuel pickup is located? I can't think of any other reason for them to be there.

Re: In cab gas tank rubber insulator
I think the self stick weatherstrip idea is the hot ticket as far as the back of the tank, as it will eliminate any metal on metal squeaking, and not retain moisture as the jute does and cause rust. As far as the rubber pads under the tank, the one that remains on mine is 1 7/8" x 4 7/8" x 1/8" thick, and when I looked closer, it looks like there was one originally on the driver side of the tank also, so I think they are there as an anti squeak solution, and probably nothing to do with sloping the tank. I was thinking of just using a double thickness of inner tube or something under my new tank now that I am pretty sure they are just for noise elimination. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Re: In cab gas tank rubber insulator
When i pulled the tank out of my 70 crew to clean it there were 4 rubber pads. two were still glued two were not. i was able to save them and the jute backing strips and put them back, my 72 parts truck also has them, they were no thicker than 1/8 th inch rubber.

My 69 did not have the rubber pieces. What would be the purpose for it ?

Re: In cab gas tank rubber insulator
I would say just a simple cushion, anti-rattle or just to keep the tank off the floor a little, much like the jute felt stuff on the back of the tank would keep vibrations down, it just seems like a good idea to put somthig under it, a couple of pieces of innertube would work..
