Gun Case

Post by pockets1776 »

Since I'm going with an exterior fuel tank, my son suggested splitting open the in-cab tank and creating a rifle, or shotgun case. Has anyone done this? Doesn't look too hard.

Never done it. Can envision it. But would be interested in what type of access you want to whatever is stored there. Will the seat need to be pulled forward for access, or can you come up with an approach that provides more immediate access? There was, sometime in bump history an option for a storage unit to replace the fuel tank. Never saw one except in pictures. A gun case disguised as a fuel tank would definitely be a reasonable security option.

You may want to check the laws in your state regarding hidden compartments. Cali, Oregon, Georgia, Illinois and Ohio have laws against having a secret compartment in your vehicle, regardless of what, if anything, is in it. Other states may have similar laws.
It is actually a felony in Ohio to have a secret compartment in your vehicle.

I bought one of them factory storage boxes for behind the seat. The old feller I got it from said it was a farm and ranch option when they put the fuel tank under the box. I think your idea is ok as long as you don't try to disguise it, make it look like a storage case or gun case with a lock. The one I bought from the old feller has a locking key access for each half. With a sort of tool tray on the top.

Good luck.

I was considering leaving it to look like a gas tank, with a couple of large locking latches. Even a Super Trooper :hmm: could figure that out. Besides, we're so rural they have to pipe sunshine into these woods!

i like your thinking. i had the same thought... its not illegal if you don't get caught, right?

at the end of the day all that behind the seat reality is just too valuable to waste storing a gun. rather have something i'll actually use like gloves, rags, jumper cables, tow strap.

The nice thing about Texas is that you can conceal a weapon in your vehicle without a permit. Glove box, under seat and so on.

Yep, or under a piece of paper. Just has to be out of sight under normal circumstances. Of course, with long guns, you don't even need to conceal.
