Aftermarket Tach Install Questions

Post by Subzero »

I bought a add on tach from Advanced Auto made by Bosch. I like it a lot and it was easy to install for the most part. It has the ability to be wired into the dash light so it will turn on a backlight when the dash lights are on. Only problem is which wire is for the dash illumination that needs to be spliced into? Where can I find the correct wire? Another question I have is that the tach is on the steering column currently held on by plastic tie straps, it works but is kinda cheap looking. Got any ideas for something that could hold it to the column without permanently altering it that would look nicer? Thanks for the help

Due to the high cost of ammunition, you can no longer expect a warning shot.

When someone was beating on my door hollering "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms", I naturally assumed it was a delivery.

Lousy picture, but stainless hose clamp, long enough so no threads show. Cut off the tail, and position the screw where it shows as little as possible.

:yt: The section on pages 5 and 6 from column #47-53 are the headlight wiring to the various illumination circuits for gauges, heater controls, etc. Pick one that's easy to get to and tap into it.

Thanks for the help, sorry about the type-o's, phone likes to make things difficult. Now to find a decent hose clamp as it seems a lot of them are very cheaply made and don't hold up. I'm thinking about using a headlight wire to tap into if that will work.

When installing aftermarket gauges and my cheeze-o harbor freight tach, I tapped into the dash light wire on the cigarette lighter.

I'd suggest tapping into a "driving light" wire instead of a headlight wire, as you want your tach light to be on with the other lights on the dash, (position 1 of the headlight switch) not just when the headlights are on (position 2 of the headlight switch) I'd assume you also would want to partake in the dimming capability of the headlight switch potentiometer.

Cheers,
Duane

I just tapped into the dimmer switch. Works fine. I don't need to dim the tachometer light.

One of the first things I made for my truck was the tach mount. It's just sections of EMT welded together on the inside. Wiring, I think blue / white is the dimmer lamp ckt. Easiest to find behind the ash tray at the radio feed.
