Coolant in carpet near passenger's door.

Post by Pat Crash »

Today, I lifted up my rubber mats and say what appears to be coolant soaked into the carpet near the passenger's door. I had the heater core replaced about 6 months ago as I had this problem for a while. I just thought it was fixed, so I never checked it again. I don't seem to be losing any coolant as the level seems just fine. Anybody else experience a thing like this?

Does it smell sweet? Then it is likely coolant...

But it has been raining in SD, right? Could be a leaking windshield seal, overflowing footwell vents' or rust-through of the cowl.... oh a bad wiper shaft seal could also lead to water intrusion.

If it's coolant, i.e. antifreeze, it has to be coming from the heater core or the hose connections to the heater core. That's the only place coolant enters/exists in the cab. Maybe a loose hose clamp? Either that or your new heater core has sprung a leak. :(

I don't believe the issue is the rain as this has been going on for a while, and it never seems to dry up. I smelled the liquid, but I couldn't really tell by the smell if it was coolant—that usually smells like pancake syrup to me. The color seems to be green, but then again I do have green carpet. I thought a picture might help. The rusted out area in the photo is damp. So this definitely didn't happen overnight. Does anyone know (or has anyone seen this before) what would cause this specific area of the right passenger interior panel to rust out like that?

That is where the bottom of the fresh air duct is spot welded. It could be full of dirt blocking the drain hole and holding moisture.

My 68 had a leaking heater core in that area. Must have been for years because the floor pan is rusted from the inside to the point of making a small hole. Found this out when I pulled up the rubber may this weekend Getting ready to do carpet. Guess I will be replacing the floor pan first.

I will check into that.

Looks like I can't rule out the heater core that was just repaired.

I think you have 2 issues. The heater core leaking will make the carpet wet but shouldn't cause the rust and junk behind the fresh air vent will cause the rust in that area.
