Laying carpet
Does anyone on here have experience or suggestions for getting carpet to lay down and follow contours in our pickups? I bought the ACC kit from LMC.

Re: Laying carpet
ACC is supposed to be a quality product, I've seen lots of positive feedback for them. I've even bought their vinyl kit for my '70 though I haven't installed it yet. When laying carpet and vinyl it helps if you allow it to relax and warm up before trying to fit it. If you've done that it shouldn't be too hard. Also it helps to have pics if you're having a specific problem.

Re: Laying carpet
Yep, wait for a warm day, lay the carpet up on a clean flat surface in the contour of the floor and let it relax for a couple hours. Then install it in the truck and work it so it's centered between the doors with the contours fitting where they need it. At that point I put a couple heavy boxes on one side to hold it in place and rolled the other back. Liberally sprayed the floor and carpet with 3m 77 adhesive and worked it from the center out pressing hard and going slow to hold the carpet in place. Then heavy boxes on the glued side and did the other. I would recommend doing the carpet before the pedals and column are in. Just easier. Also, don't glue the back where the seat belts bolt in until you use a soldering iron to melt through the bolt hole locations. I did use a razor blade to cut where the jack stud sticks up.
ACC carpet is OK, it's about 80% the quality and durability of the original stuff. The die faded in about 5 years on my ranchero and it eventually fell apart due to moisture and daily used over 20 years of duty. My '68 fairlane has the original stuff in and it faded at the hump but has a much tighter loop profile.

Re: Laying carpet
Thanks guys. It helped when I got smart enough to place the carpet correctly over the hump and the floorboards. I had it two far back by about four inches. It actually followed the contours very well once in place. It just seemed to go too high up on the firewall the first time i tried. Got it now, thanks.

Re: Laying carpet
We put a new carpet in my nephews truck and used a few half full sandbags where needed. Worked well.

Re: Laying carpet
The biggest problem I had with the ACC kit was that it was too narrow at the top. I have about a 3/4" gap on each side at the front of my floorboard.
