Factory backing plates pinching wheel cylinder boots
I am re-assembling the 9 3/8” rear in my 1970, and found some NOS Ford/Kelsey Hayes wheel cylinders. Just like the cheap ones I tossed, the tabs on the backing plate pinch the rubber caps on the wheel cylinders. Is there anything wrong with this set-up?

Photo added, and here are the part boxes in case these look familiar. Master parts catalog lists these as superseding the original part numbers.

I wouldn't think that would cause any problems. As long as it's not interfering with the plunger it oughta be fine.

It doesn’t really seem like it’s possible to install a cylinder there without it touching the boots. The tabs are probably there as extra insurance to hold the boots on, I’m guessing.

Re: Factory backing plates pinching wheel cylinder boots
That's a normal fit. The tabs attempt to keep the pistons in the cylinder if adjustment is WAY out

Re: Factory backing plates pinching wheel cylinder boots
Thank you for the feedback! I’ll have the brakes back together soon, but I’m now waiting for custom axles to arrive after finding out the bearings for the larger 9 3/8” axle ends are recently obsolete . . .
