Hi Guys,
I need some help with gross axle weight ratings (GAWR).
Does anyone have a source with factory GAWR ratings for std. twin I-Beam front and C9TA-DB Dana 60 rear axles?
In germany we get paperwork from "TÜV" which specifies the max. axle ratings. For my truck they wrote:
GVWR: 3404kg (7500lbs)
front: 1360kg (3000lbs) (is that right???????)
rear: 2358kg (5200lbs)
rear is ok so far, truck has a dry weight about 2020kg (4455lbs). But the front axle takes a dry (without driver; 1/4 fuel) load about 1220kg (2690lbs)
That seems a bit heavy in the front or were´s the mistake?
It´s originally a 390 Auto truck and has currently 429 w/ 4-Speed. The 429 should have less weight than the 390 according to my google search...
any help appreciated
Cheers
Chris

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that they are about the same in the weight department. Both are all cast iron engines similar in size.cash667 wrote: It´s originally a 390 Auto truck and has currently 429 w/ 4-Speed. The 429 should have less weight than the 390 according to my google search...

Anyway - the front axle is nearly on it´s load limit without anything in the cab or bed.
I mean if I add two people and a full tank into the cab we are almost at the limit. There´s something wrong...
I wasn´t able to find a load rating for the twin I-beam front end yet...

Hi Chris, have you looked through the factory literature pages here, one of the salesman guides may have that information, look at later years too.
That said, something seems off with your weights, granted yours is 250 and mine is a 100 but my ENTIRE TRUCK weighs less than 4500lbs with me in it. No way your truck should be that heavy unloaded.

Robert, thank you so much! I completely forgot the factory literature page here..DuckRyder wrote:Hi Chris, have you looked through the factory literature pages here, one of the salesman guides may have that information, look at later years too.

And of course your right, I found the ratings, and they are exact the same which the german TÜV gave to me.
So yes....maybe my weights are off...
The thing is, I was told that the scale I used is gouvernmental calibrated. It´s mostly used by heavier vehicles and so it ranges up to 20tons. Maybe there is some mistake by measuring lower weights. But it recognized me leaving the truck with about 80kg, wich is correct..
Since I start to disassamble the truck the last two days I have to wait till I´m done with the resto for new measurements
Does anyone with a F250 have reliable dry weights? Maybe also axle dry weights?
Thanks
Chris

Chris:
Maybe I misread or misunderstood, are you saying the scale says the back of the truck weighs 4455lbs or the whole truck, if the whole truck I’d expect that is about right, the 250 has a slightly thicker frame, heavier springs and a heavier duty axles (IIRC), my 100 weighs around 4250 without me in it and with minimal extra junk laying around it (can’t remember if the spare tire was in it or not.)
If they say the rear weighs 4455LBS it seems like there was a Mini (of the Morris variety) in the bed...
Most of these scales are computerized and print, but is it possible the numbers got somehow mixed up?
Also did they weigh it for shipping?
I am not any kind of expert but my initial reaction is that persons and fuel in the cab should not be entirely carried by the front axel but rather distributed between the two axles in some ratio based on where the CG is and the distance of the weight from the CG...

Oh and from what I can find a 385 series motor is said to weigh anywhere between 650 (about same as FE) and 720, obviously aluminum parts like intakes and heads can make a large difference...

Sorry for the confusion...DuckRyder wrote:Chris:

To make it more Clear:
Actual dry weight
Total: 4455lbs
Front: 2690lbs
Rear: 1765lbs
Load limit
Total: 7500lbs
Front: 3000lbs
Rear: 5200lbs
And yes, the CG of the load makes a big difference: if you put load direct on the rear axle, it doesnt affect the front, the more behind the rear axle it will lift up the front.
And yes the 429 could be a little heavier than the stock 390. Also I got power disc brakes and power steering which adds up weight on the front.
For those of you wondering why I‘m taking it so serious with the weight ratings: I‘m planing to build my own retro style camper shell. And therefore I need to know how heavy this thing could be and where the CG ist best according to the Trucks load limits.
Thanks for your thoughts
